Lessons from the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) Open Science Community

Dr. Patrick Ryan, Vice President of Observational Health Data Analytics at Janssen Research & Development and Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, will present the 2021 Joseph V. Scaletti Memorial Catalyst Lecture on Friday, April 2nd 2021. This year’s lecture is presented virtually due to pandemic travel restrictions.

If social media companies are able to wield big data analytics to target us with precision marketing, then why aren’t we using data analysis techniques more extensively in healthcare, where the outcomes mean so much more to us as individuals and as a society? 

The OHDSI Open Science Community focuses on evidence, epidemiology data methods, and a shared standard for open source electronic health records: the OMOP common data model. Dr Ryan makes a convincing argument that publication bias could be overcome through data analytics — challenging the status quo of one research group, one experiment, one paper.
